Legal Document Software has been helping internet marketers and online business alike stay in compliance with the FTC. What exactly is it that needs to stay in compliance and how do you go about keeping your site up to date?

For the longest time the federal government did not pay a lot of attention to the internet. It was new to them and the federal government really did not know much about it or its potential. Fast forward twenty years and now they see how good and how bad the internet has become. To combat the bad side of the internet, the FTC was tasks to combat those that wanted to do business in an unethical fashion.

The FTC enacted laws that would allow them to not only shut down a website or blog, but to also freeze assets, shut down bank accounts and levy some very large fines. These laws were enough to not only put people out of business, but also put them into jail.

In 2009 the laws became even stricter and far reaching. Not only would big online businesses be under investigation, but basically anyone that decided to try their hand at internet marketing. This includes the first time online business man or women, stay at home parents who like to blog. Basically anyone is at risk for potential action from the FTC.

How do get into compliance and how do you stay there. It is simple in the eyes of the FTC.

1. Be transparent with everything you do. It is not good enough to be honest. The words on your site must have some foundation to stand on. For example, don’t say “product A” is better than “product B”, if you never owned the products. If one of your readers complains and easily submits the claim to the FTC, you could find yourself fined and shutdown”. Rule of thumb, buy the products you talk about and give an honest opinion that you can back up.

2. If you are using endorsements, make sure the endorser has proof to back up their statement. You are liable for their words.

3. Disclaimers, privacy policies etc. You need them and must have them displayed on your site. They must match your business model. Forget about those ten page disclosure pages. Focus on what you do and how to protect what you do. A ten page disclosure does nothing for you if it does not protect the business you are conducting.

4. Finally grab yourself affordable legal help. It is a cost effective way to keep your business going and keeps you out of trouble.

That is basically all you need to do. It takes some time to get everything in order. If you the kind that likes to read all the legal stuff and interpret what they are trying to say, then go at it yourself. Yet if time is money and you want to get your site compliant in the least amount of time, then definitely go with the legal software. The cost is low and it is worth the investment.
